Six for 2026
Reflections on 2025
People
I continue to be deeply grateful for the privilege of serving as MP for Guildford constituency. One of the things that brings me t
I lose track of the number of people I meet over the course of a year. It’s one of the greatest joys of this role – meeting so many of you on doorsteps, at events, during visits to local businesses and organisations, and even people who’ve stopped me on the street to say hi and ask a question (something I really don't mind; in fact, I quite enjoy it.)
What stands out in every conversation is the passion and care people have for our town, villages, and communities. Of course, we don't always see eye to eye on political policy, but the fact that almost every single person I chat with wants to see our communities thrive speaks volumes about who we are as people and a constituency.
Thank you for sharing so candidly about your hopes and concerns - my hope is that you feel the I I'm doing a good job serving you in Guildford and being your voice in Westminster.
Serving You through Casework
I receive hundreds of emails per day asking questions or asking for help. Alongside my hard-working team, we aim to reply to every email.
The requests for help are highly varied, we do our best to work with individuals to get the outcomes they hope to see. Sometimes that is not possible but we will always travel the journey with you. The graphic below gives you an idea of the topics that we have dealt with over the course of this year and below that are just a few examples where we've been able to get results for local people.
I was able to intervene in a delayed family visa application, ensuring that a two-year-old child with congenital heart disease could reunite with his family. We were delighted to learn that the child has now safely returned to England.
My team and I helped a constituent resolve a longstanding dispute with Transport for London, securing the reimbursement of nearly £1,500 in wrongly issued ULEZ fines.
I supported a constituent in obtaining their A1 certificate, allowing them to apply for work abroad.
We assisted another resident in recovering their passport from the Department for Work and Pensions, enabling them to spend Christmas with their family.
Your Voice in Westminster
Speaking up in Westminster isn’t just about speeches in the Chamber. As an MP, there are a variety of methods I use to raise issues on your behalf. Here are some of the ways I do that:
Early Day Motions – I often sign these alongside other MPs to highlight areas of concern at home and abroad. Typically, the ones I submit are focused on constituency matters, often celebrating the work of a business, person or organisation.
Speaking in Parliament – This includes not only the House of Commons Chamber, but also Westminster Hall debates and questions in Select or Bill Committees to highlight issues. We post clips of me speaking on social media and on my YouTube channel.
Letters to Ministers – I regularly write to Government ministers about local matters and individual cases. Ministers must respond, and I share replies online where appropriate.
Written Questions – Spoken questions in the Chamber are organised by a ballot system (yes, really), so I often turn to written questions to get answers on issues. Again, ministers or their department are required to reply to me.
You can view all my written questions here.
Looking Ahead to 2026
A Fresh Start for Surrey
As you are no doubt aware, Surrey’s elections in 2025 were cancelled after Surrey’s Conservatives asked the Labour Government to do so – something I found appalling. However, thanks to a question raised in Parliament by my colleague Monica Harding, we now have confirmation that elections for the new unitary authorities will take place this May.
These elections are hugely significant - they're your chance to choose who will represent West Surrey and the values it will be built on.
For decades, Surrey County Council has been run by the Conservatives, leaving us with crumbling roads, a crisis in special educational needs, and a mountain of debt. Across Surrey, new Lib Dem (and other non-Conservative) leaderships have been working hard to fix the problems they inherited, but the biggest challenge remains the £4.5 billion debt set to be assigned to West Surrey from day one – a burden that myself and other Lib Dem MPs and council leaders have fought hard to prevent from being dumped on local taxpayers.
I believe that the Lib Dems across Surrey have shown they can tackle tough issues openly and realistically, putting local people first. I’m excited to see our candidates announced soon and campaigning to help get them elected so that together we can deliver for the people of Guildford and West Surrey.
Fighting for Better Online Safeguards
At one of my regular surgeries, a father shared with me the tragic story of his daughter Hannah, who committed suicide. Since then, I have been working in parliament to bring change to a number of aspects that enabled her to access what she needed to do so. This has led me to start working with the Molly Rose Foundation, who have long been campaigning in the area of online safety, and I will be continuing to do so in 2026, particularly in terms of addressing the growing problem of online suicide forums.
You can find out more about their work and the campaign against pro-suicide forums that I’m supporting here.
Trains and Greener Travel
I believe that one of the most effective ways that we can make an impact on the climate crisis is by choosing greener travel methods – unfortunately reliability and accessibility issues mean that this isn’t always an option.
In 2026, I’ll keep pressing for a decision on at least one new station for Guildford and for accessibility improvements at all stations across the constituency. Data is key to driving change, which is why I’m running a trains survey (and plan to make it annual).
Please do complete it yourself, whether you travel daily, weekly, or occasionally, and share it with friends, family, colleagues, and on social media so we can gather as many responses as possible.
Of course, this isn't everything that I will be working on in 2026, but it is 3 areas that I’ll be focusing on with the help of my team. I know new issues will arise over the course of the year that I need to respond to and act on. However, like all of us, I cannot be everywhere all the time; this is where I need your help – you are my eyes and ears across our wonderful constituency. If there’s something you think I should know about, please email me. If I can’t take it on personally, I’ll do my best to signpost you to others who can or suggest ways to bring people together to tackle it.
